Sign letter to the Schools Minister Dear Minister McKinnell Transport to education is vital for disabled students. For families like ours, where the journey to school is likely to be longer, council provided transport to school and college can be the glue that helps hold everything together. It can be the difference between coping and crisis. Helping us juggle careers, getting other children to school. For our disabled young people it gives them independence, opportunities to learn new skills. However, this all too often falls away at 16. Whilst our young people are expected to be in education or training until they are 18, the provision of council transport suddenly changes at 16. Their needs haven’t changed, they are often at the same school or college. Most can’t use public transport like their non-disabled peers. How can this be fair? No parent puts their child on a bus or in a taxi for a long journey in the morning out of choice – it would be far better if there was a school to meet their needs just round the corner. We aren’t asking for anything special – just the right support to get our children to the right school or college. Please commit to closing the loophole in the law. To end the postcode lottery and give disabled learners aged 16 – 18 the future that they deserve.
